Lincoln
Lincoln was originally a Roman
settlement of great importance nearly 2000 years ago and the roman
legacy can be clearly seen around the City. Halfway farm is situated
on the original Roman Fosse Way (now the A46) and the Fossdyke
Canal, a major engineering feat links the Trent and Witham rivers.
The Norman Conquest a thousand
years later led to the building of the Castle and Cathedral, the
latter being one of Britain's largest and finest places of worship.
Sited on Lincoln's highest point, the floodlit Cathedral at night
appears to float above the City and is a spectacular landmark
for the traveler approaching Lincoln.
Not far from the Cathedral are
many examples, in both timber and stone, of the buildings of the
medieval City of Lincoln. The Stonebow and Guildhall, the Norman
Jew's House, and the Cardinal's Hat are a selection of the many
ancient and interesting landmarks to be seen.
