Lincoln

Lincoln was originally a Roman settlement of great importance nearly 2000 years ago and the roman legacy can be clearly seen around the City. Halfway farm is situated on the original Roman Fosse Way (now the A46) and the Fossdyke Canal, a major engineering feat links the Trent and Witham rivers.

The Norman Conquest a thousand years later led to the building of the Castle and Cathedral, the latter being one of Britain's largest and finest places of worship. Sited on Lincoln's highest point, the floodlit Cathedral at night appears to float above the City and is a spectacular landmark for the traveler approaching Lincoln.

Not far from the Cathedral are many examples, in both timber and stone, of the buildings of the medieval City of Lincoln. The Stonebow and Guildhall, the Norman Jew's House, and the Cardinal's Hat are a selection of the many ancient and interesting landmarks to be seen.

Newark

A notable feature of Newark is its historic Castle, dating from the 12th Centaury. King John died in the Castle in 1216 and two kings - Henry VII and James I stayed there. The Castle, a Royalist stronghold in the Civil War, was partially demolished on the orders of Cromwell, but is gradually being restored.

Newark's also boasts one of the largest cobbled market squares in the country, around which are many fine old buildings

Royal Air Force

Halfway Farm is exceptionally well placed for visits to operational and historic airfields in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Directly opposite Halfway Farm Motel is the now redundant airfield of Swinderby which during the last war stationed Avro Manchester, Halifax and Stirling bombers. Also close by is RAF Waddington, RAF Cranwell and Scampton airfield from where the famous Dambusters flew during WWII. As you will see the area has a long and interesting military history.
